PARENT NOTE: As your student's reading teacher, I will work to get to know them as a person as well as who they are as a reader, including their reading preferences, abilities, interests and hobbies. As part of our reading journey, I will be regularly recommending books to students based on this. My goal is to help each student find books that they will enjoy and that will challenge them to grow as readers.
However, I understand that every family has different values and perspectives on what is appropriate for their child. While I will do my best to recommend books that align with each student’s needs, I want to emphasize that parents and guardians have the final say in what is suitable for their child to read.
I encourage parents to discuss book selections with their child and to review any recommended books together. If there’s ever a book that you feel is not a good fit, I’m more than happy to help your child find an alternative that both you and your child feel comfortable with.
Unless it is work or assignments that students did not finish in class because they did not use their time wisely, our only homework is reading for 20 minutes a day.
This graphic helps us see the impact reading has on our students' vocabulary acquisition and achievement.
This might be something your student works up to and I by no means think this needs to be 20 minutes straight and uninterrupted (although ideal). We will learn about the habits of good readers, but below you will find resources to help you support your reader at home!
