Curriculum

Curriculum Overview

8th grade will follow six (6) thematic units. Students will read mentor texts and paired, supplemental texts for each unit. At the end of each unit, students will perform varied, authentic assessments that measure their understanding of the texts and the ELA standards accompanying them.

We have many electronic resources that we will use in conjunction with research-based instructional strategies. For example, we will use CommonLit, NewsELA, HMH Into Literature, and other sites to supplement instruction.

We will read novels in class. Students should purchase their own copies of the novels. The first novel we will read is Ghost by Jason Reynolds. This novel can be purchased at any local book retailer or Amazon.

The 8th grade ELA curriculum is closely aligned with the Georgia Standards of Excellence and follows the Henry County Schools Learning Progressions.

Students are required to read out of the classroom. Those who choose not to read outside of the classroom will not be prepared and will likely not pass the class.

finals/ midterms

Students will also be required to take a midterm in the Fall semester and a final in the Spring semester. These will be worth 20% of their final grade.
