Welcome to the 'What is a Tenement?' page where we will deep drive into the history of the Dublin tenements, learn about what the living conditions were like and read about some stories from people who lived there.
A Must Watch...
Be sure to watch this documentary that aired on RTÉ a few years ago. It is 45 minutes long but is well worth a watch to see some footage of the tenements and the horrible conditions. This episode also shows us interviews with people who lived in the tenements. It is presented by Bryan Murray who is in fact a descendent of the tenements himself... just like many other Dubliners.
What was a Tenement house like?
Please enjoy this short 3 minute Adobe Spark video where I discuss tenement houses and some of the living conditions that were typically seen.
HOT OFF THE PRESS!
Newspaper articles and blog posts are an amazing way to hear some first hand accounts of peoples lived experiences. Check out this Padlet wall where I have added some articles about the Dublin tenements. They make an interesting read.
Feel free to add any articles about the tenements that you find interesting!
Rooms were often divided up into two or three smaller rooms – a kitchen, a living room, and a bedroom. Entire families crammed into small living spaces and shared an outside tap and lavatory with many others in the same building. Often, two toilets outside would have been expected to accommodated 70 people.
The bedrooms would have been damp and cold with many sharing a bed like the one that can be seen in the picture. People would cook, eat, sleep all in the one tight space. We can see a child sleeping in the bed in the above picture, it's likely she was ill with cholera, typhus, or tuberculosis.
