Hi there! Welcome to the Drama resource page of this website. I have shared some fun ways to integrate a history topic such as the Dublin Tenements with Drama.
Me, Mollser is a drama based on a 15-year-old character from Seán O’Casey’s play The Plough and the Stars, set in 1916. Mollser suffered from Tuberculosis and the play gives a sense of a teenager’s life 100 years ago.
The Plough and the Stars is the story of ordinary lives ripped apart by the poverty and war of the time (1916). The residents of a Dublin tenement shelter from the violence that sweeps through the city's streets. A revolution that will shape the country's future rages around them.
So what is it really like, Mollser?
Watch this short video where Mollser gives us an insight into her world... What questions do you have for her?
Writing in Role
Writing in role is a drama strategy that enables us to put ourselves in the shoes of a fictional character. Imagine you are Mollser's bestfriend, you grew up on Henrietta Street together. You have recently moved away and no longer live in the Tenements...write to Mollser and ask her questions about the Tenements and share your memories with her.
A modern day Mollser
Here is an piece from Mollser’s diary, reflecting on modern life from the character’s point of view. It was written by actor Mary-Lou McCarthy, who created the role in the 2013 Abbey Theatre production of Me, Mollser. It's written in the style of the Dublin accent at the time...if you read it allowed you'll sound like your in the play!
Visualisation - King of the Fairies
Close your eyes.....
Listen to the King of the Fairies played by the Dubliners and visualise the Tenements in the early 1900's. What do you see? How does it feel? How does it make you feel?
Visualisation is a drama strategy that helps use imagine we are in the world we are creating. The music helps create the atmosphere to bring us on the journey.
Ocupational Mime
Express how someone in the Tenements felt through the use of occupational mime or express how learning about the tenements made you feel.
