I believe that the checklist is effective because it covers essential steps to create a welcoming, organized, and supportive classroom environment on the very first day.
By preparing in advance—such as arranging furniture for collaboration, posting routines, and planning a Morning Meeting—teachers set a clear structure that helps students know what to expect, reducing anxiety and behavioral issues.
Building a positive community through warm greetings, sharing personal stories, and playing name games helps students feel valued and connected right away. This foundation of trust and belonging encourages respectful behavior and engagement throughout the year.
Teaching routines and expectations explicitly, using modeling and practice, ensures students understand how to navigate the classroom smoothly and follow key procedures. This clarity minimizes confusion and off-task behavior, allowing for a productive start.
