What are Missouri Learning Standards?
Missouri Learning Standards are standards that teachers adhere to when teaching curriculum to their class. These standards serve as a blueprint that guide in lesson planning and ensure that teachers are teaching necessary content. Below are links to the standards for third graders, for your convenience.

Priority standards
Priority standards are the most important standards to uphold. They are foundational concepts that clearly identify what students need to know.

Since there is an abundance of standards for teachers to adhere to, the standards are given codes for the sake of organization and efficiency. This chart explains what each aspect of the code means and how to decipher them.
Let's break this down with a real example. Here is a code that I will use as a guide when teaching your kids: 3.R.1.B.a
For starters, it's important to know that in elementary, grade level is always the first thing listed. For my third-grade curriculum, every coded standard will begin with a 3.
After grade level comes the strand. In my code above, the strand is reading, thus the "R."
Big ideas are listed off as numbers. The first big idea of reading is to "develop and apply skills to the reading process." This is the big idea that we are using, and since it is the first big idea, there is a "1" listed.
Concept is next. We are using the second concept, which is "develop an understanding of vocabulary by..." Since this is the second concept, we are putting an uppercase B.
Last is the expectation, which directly connects to the concept. We are using the first expectation within this concept, which is why we are using a lowercase a. This "a" (the expectation) states, "decoding and identifying the
meaning of common prefixes and suffixes and
knowing how they change the meaning of root
words."
Here is what the concept and expectation look like when in collaboration: "Develop an understanding of vocabulary by decoding and identifying the meaning of common prefixes and suffixes and knowing how they change the meaning of root words."
What are item specifications?
Item specifications includes all Missouri grade level/course expectations arranged by domains/strands (see what a strand is above). According to DESE (Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education), "It defines what could be measured on a variety of assessments."
According to DESE, these are the components of the items specifications.
Expectation Unwrapped breaks down a list of clearly delineated content and skills the students are expected to know and be
able to do upon mastery of the Expectation.
Depth of Knowledge (DOK) Ceiling indicates the highest level of cognitive complexity that would typically be assessed on a
large scale assessment. The DOK ceiling is not intended to limit the complexity one might reach in classroom instruction.
Item Format indicates the types of test questions used in large scale assessment. For each expectation, the item format specifies the type best suited for that particular expectation.
Content Limits/Assessment Boundaries are parameters that item writers should consider when developing a large-scale assessment. For example, some expectations should not be assessed on a large-scale assessment but are better suited for
local assessment.
Sample stems are examples that address the specific elements of each expectation and address varying DOK levels. The sample stems provided in this document are in no way intended to limit the depth and breadth of possible item stems. The expectation should be assessed in a variety of ways.
Stimulus Materials defines types of stimulus materials that can be used in the item stems
