Growing up, I loved learning about the world around me and was very much a go-getter in my own schooling. However, I developed many perfectionistic tendencies that made me afraid of failure, which made me view learning as a stressful obligation, rather than a captivating privilege. As I got older and began to accept that failure is a part of life, I realized that I wanted to make learning a stress-free, engaging, and challenging activity for future students of the public school system. It became my goal to help students from all walks of life grow to become lifelong learners in a safe environment where they didn't have to be afraid of messing up.
Children will one day inherit our world. My future students will be the future leaders, parents, dreamers, decision makers, defenders, creators, consumers, contributors, entrepreneurs, educators and caregivers of our country. As their teacher, I will have the humbling opportunity to inspire their imaginations, encourage their interests, and positively impact their developing minds. I will be able to teach them skills that they will use for the rest of their lives, bridging the gap between what is known and what is not. This is nothing short of an honor.
I have always possessed not only a passion for bringing up the next generation, but also a deeply rooted sense of duty to care for them. The empathy, concern, and patience that I hold towards children exceeds that of which I hold for anyone else. My heart genuinely longs to care for and instruct students, creating a safe environment in which they feel comfortable to learn in. Being able to teach my own class is my dream job, and I can't wait to oversee and cultivate my students' growth in academics.
When I was in 8th grade, I began to explore career fields in which I could impact and influence a child’s life for the better. I remember having a conversation with my mom, telling her that I was thinking about becoming a school counselor. I’ll never forget the moment when she looked at me and said, “Rach, you will get to have such a deeper impact on their lives if you’re in the classroom with them every day.” My heart had never felt such a peace regarding my future profession. My mother, an educator herself, homeschooled me until I was in high school. She instilled in me that I was capable of learning difficult concepts and that struggling was not only part of the learning process, but also proof that I was trying. It was from her that I learned the importance of discipline and working hard in all my endeavors. I want to be a teacher like my mom, inspiring confidence and growth mindsets in my students.
It is incredibly important to me that every student who walks into my classroom knows that they are capable and invaluable, they have potential and worth, and they are able to lead to make a difference. I aspire to work alongside my students, teaching them how to utilize their strengths and face their weaknesses. I hope to be a teacher that inspires effort, engagement, inquisitiveness, confidence, and a desire to dig deeper. It is my hope to raise up hard workers that joyfully serve others and contribute to society.
