As AI has grown in popularity in the past couple of years, we responded to the following prompt presented by Dr. Diana Williams...
AI is rapidly transforming the landscape of education. Please explore the role of AI in educational practices and consider its potential implications for students and teachers positively or negatively. Also, you will examine ethical concerns related to AI use in education.
Discussion Board:
Identify an example of how AI is currently being used in education and discuss the benefits and challenges of using this AI tool in the classroom. Are there ethical concerns you see arising from the use of AI in education? Explain. How do you see AI evolving in education over the next decade?
Please find an article that you have read that may back up your claims and link it to your initial post.
MY RESPONSE
Only a few short years ago, A.I. was a topic I knew nothing about. Today, A.I. has suddenly shot into the spotlight of the cultural zeitgeist and future educators must learn how this emerging technology will impact the field.
Currently, A.I. is used for a few purposes in education. Proving more efficient and unbiased than educators, A.I. grading tools are used when completing or analyzing assessments (Harry & Sayudin, 2023). Many educators worry that the use of A.I. in the field compromises the integrity of the human connection between student and teacher when it comes to grading and teaching (Harry & Sayudin, 2023); however, it is important to note that many students struggle throughout their educational career due to human educators (for one reason or another) being unable to meet the student's unique needs. The versatility of A.I. technologies implies that proper incorporation of these new technologies could help students to succeed and progress like never before. A.I.'s ability to learn over time and adapt to a situation indicates that A.I. could be used to hyper-specialize each student's learning experience so as to meet each unique and changing need of students (Harry & Sayudin, 2023).
In the process implementing A.I. technology in the pursuit of improving the ability to serve students, educators should be careful to maintain privacy, transparency, and fairness (Harry & Sayudin, 2023). These ethical and privacy concerns are nothing to sweep under the rug. A technology that can learn as time passes should always be under heavy monitoring so as to keep users, especially student users, safe.
Personally, I agree with (Harry & Sayudin, 2023) in that the evolutionary aspects of Artificial Intelligence will skyrocket the technology to be of significant importance to our daily lives. As humans continue to learn about A.I. technologies, A.I. continues to learn about us. I believe this could be due to what A.I. is learning about humanity. Humans turn to technologies to improve our lives; and, because we mostly use A.I. as a tool, the technology could learn to fulfill many roles in our society. I believe A.I. could eventually be used to teach whole classrooms of students, diagnose patients at a clinic, and many other duties that humans require help in fulfilling.
While humans should not approach A.I. with an aura of fear, ensuring proper implementation and use of A.I. in classrooms remains crucial to the effective use of the technology while keeping staff and students safe!
