  • Most of the exercises will be marked by me during class time or from your home folders. So, it is also important to make sure you name the filename properly.
  • When saving files be sure to use a descriptive file name for that particular activity, if one is not provided.
  • Save your work frequently! You should make about 8 to 10 saves per class! Only save in your U drive or Google drive! They are the only safe places for your course work! Do not save on the local computer!

Reflective Journals: Keep a separate notebook; can be hand-written or typed up; keep it updated and on the shelf to be marked.

Google Drive and Google Docs slideshow. It also has Reflective Journal stuff in it.

Reflective Journal entries should be done using Google Docs and printed off or hand written. Keep them in your duotang on the classroom shelf provided. One journal per week. Journal files should be named as followed, Journal 1, Journal 2, etc.. If you choose to keep them electronically, make a Google account if you don't have one then make a folder in Google Drive called "MediaStudies120". Share it with Todd.Swim@gmail.com and make it so I can edit. If you share your folder I can check all the work in that folder, edit will allow me to put in comments where applicable. Value 30

  • View the Khan Academy video on Mass Media. Youtube link.
  • Use the Media Log directions found on page 5 of your text when completing your Friday media logs.
  • Do the activity found on page 3 from your text in your notebook. Let me know when you've completed it for marking.
  • Do the activity found at the bottom of page 4 from your text
  • Do activity #1 from the bottom of page 8. Give 3 examples. (I'll show examples in class). Value 20

Module 2: Media and the Internet

  • Student Privacy and Protection: Your digital footprint - YouTube - The Digital Footprint; click here
  • Complete a 10 slide powerpoint on Student Privacy and Protection. Include digital footprint, social media, positive and negative repercussions, how businesses use your digital footprint, include the results of a Google search of yourself. Save the presentation file in your home folder, Media Studies 120 folder. The name for the file should be "Digital Footprint". Value 20
  • Define the following media and internet related terms: cookie, data mining, Privacy Act, raw data privacy, digital footprint, PIPEDA, point of sale, digital trail, Loyalty Program, information. To be handed in. Value 11
  • Go to the New Brunswick Virtual High School's Media Studies 120 page. Click on this link and use your nbss\your login name and then your password. We'll finish work on Module 2 from this site. Any journal entries can be put in your media log in the white cabinet.

Module 3: Advertising, Marketing and You.

  • Work from the New Brunswick Virtual High School's Media Studies 120 Blended course page. The link is at the top of this page.
  • Do the assignment on from the "Marketers are Targeting You" page. Define using your own words and give an example of each of the techniques that marketers use to target consumers. Title your assignment as; "Marketers are Targeting You", include the date and your name at the top. Type it up in a word processing application (eg. Google Docs, MSWord), save it in your Google Drive Media Studies 120 folder for marking or personal drive here at school. Make sure you let me know where you've saved it. Print it and hand it in. Value 14.
  • Do the Marketing Self-Assessment on the following page, print it off (use the snipping tool to copy and paste into MSPowerpoint or MSWord) put your name on it and hand it in. Value 5

  • Analyzing an Advertisement - Use the questions listed on the page for analyzing an advertisement to do you own analysis of an advertisement. Put your name on it, title it as Analyzing an Advertisement, print it and pass it in. Value 10

Module 4: Independent Study Project

  • Do the assignment on "Explore a Media-related topic"; Be sure to submit the project proposal form. Use a presentation application to make your assignment, print it off and hand it in. Value 40
