Individual and Family Living in Canada
Description:
The components of this curriculum derive from the Family Life Cycle & Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs. Healthy families create healthy individuals. Functional families create functional societies. Therefore, an understanding of our basic needs, the family life cycle, family dynamics, communication skills, & developmental tasks & responsibilities of individuals will enhance the ability of students to cope with societal changes.
General Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of the Family Studies 9, each student will be expected to…
- Evaluate the effects of various relationships on family dynamics
- Demonstrate an understanding of the typical family life cycle (family ecosystem) and its transitions
- Understand Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs and its relationship to the family
- Investigate the purposes and various forms of the family
- Analyze appropriate communications skills and nurturing parental practices
- Examine societal changes as they affect the family
Requirements of the course:
- Please be on time and prepared – bring your text, binder with loose-leaf and pens/pencils
- Pass assignments in on time. There will be a penalty for late assignments
- Tests are announced ahead of time. If you are absent the day a test is written then you will write on the day you return
- It is your responsibility to catch up on missed work. Ask a classmate or the teacher for directions so you do not get behind
- Behavior Journal - all aspects of students’ behavior and performance is documented.
Evaluation:
- Students are assessed using a variety of methods – quizzes & tests, research project(s), written assignments, response journals, posters, class mark, and group work
- There is no final exam in Family Studies 9
- Term 2 mark 100% - made up of classroom work and tests
STANDARDS AND EXPECTATIONS FOR STUDENTS
Standards:
- Be on time.
- Tardiness - make up time, 20 minutes for the first time, time doubles after that.
- Only water is allowed and only at the desks, not near computer equipment.
- Cell phones are permitted for class purposes. No texting, game play, or other misuse allowed.
- Discipline will be similar to "real world" work place.
- Abuse/Misuse of school property will not be tolerated.
- Remain seated.
- Raise your hand if you need help and be patient.
- Be quiet and remain quiet.
- Maintain your Workstation, keep it neat, push in chairs, put things away, etc. (Marks on each report)
- Be respectful.
Expectations:
- Students are expected to stay on task and complete all mandatory exercises, in an efficient manner.
- Students are expected to come to class prepared with all materials for that class.
- Students will not be allowed to be excused during class time unless an emergency arises and then students must ask permission. No one is allowed to leave without permission unless they like to make up time. (10 minutes)
- Students who require help during class time must raise their hands. All other times they are to remain seated and stay quiet.
