Wake Up the Numbers
2. Recognize & Create Numbers
3. Read Math Story
4. Participate in Math Activity
This is a great time to not only wake up the numbers, but wake up our bodies too! At school we might project a number line on the white board and have the students work on their gross motor skills by taking turns coming up to the board and pointing out the numbers as we count. We also have the students point out the numbers on a number line on a piece of paper at home (you could create one that looks like the example above if you want).
Typically we start this activity by having one student roll dice to determine what number we are going to look for and create. Then, I will hold up two numbers (one that matches the rolled number and a different number and see if the student can look at or tap the matching number). We also then work on creating the number that was rolled by either:
Writing the number on a white board or paper
Counting to the number by using an instrument, like banging on a drum or shaking a shake
Creating the number by using a sensory material like play-dough, wiki sticks, Popsicle sticks, shaving cream - be creative and have fun!
You can repeat this part of the lesson as many times as you and your child would like!
To connect math and numbers to our world, we read a story that talks about different math concepts, like time, calendar, amounts, dimensions and other options. I will try to post a couple of different Math stories so you can rotate listening to them. But remember, repetition is the mother of learning, so feel free to use the same one multiple times.
After reading the story, the students will make a choice as to which activity they would like to do that is connected to the story. You can do only one or all of the activities during Math, it's about having fun and exposing your child to numbers and math concepts.
