In first grade, we use the Benchmark reading curriculum to build strong foundational reading skills, vocabulary, comprehension, and a love of books. Our reading instruction follows a workshop model that begins with a focused mini-lesson. Students then practice the skill while reading independently.
During independent reading, the teacher meets with students in small groups or one-on-one conferences to provide targeted instruction based on individual needs. Students learn how to think deeply about texts, discuss their ideas, use reading strategies, and understand what they read.
Our goal is to develop confident, lifelong readers who not only comprehend what they read, but also truly enjoy reading.
