Acids and Bases
Overview/Rationale
In this unit students evaluate the characteristics of acids and bases. They measure and calculate pH and pOH to identify acids and bases. They apply this understanding to authentic scenarios in daily life, including how to safely handle these substances.
Student Objectives
● Define acids and bases based on the Hydrogen ion concentration.
● Name commonly used acids and bases in the lab.
● Classify solutions as neutral, acidic or basic using pH measurements.
● Identify the products that form when an acid and a base react in a neutralization reaction.
Vocabulary
Acids, bases, Hydrogen ion, hydroxide ion, pH, pOH, neutral solution, neutralization reaction, titration, salt, indicator
