Units designed based on NC Standard Course of Study and the appropriate learning goals and skills.
Backwards design of lessons utilizing clear end assessments and standards-based grading practices
Promote literacy, critical-thinking, and clear analysis throughout all units.
Apply varied assessment methods to measure the knowledge gained by students throughout the unit and to guide student learning and supports.
Summative Assessment including use of pre and post tests to show growth and mastery of literacy skills.
Example: During my teaching experience, I focused on developing students’ reading and comprehension skills, an area of weakness on the Common Assessments. I utilized targeted reading passages and writing scaffolds to help students with breaking down meaning. At the end of this experience, all students’ scores showed growth and gained in both reading and writing skills at the end of the year Summative Assessment.
Formative Assessment aligned to content and skills standards that drives classroom practices to increase student learning.
Example: When results of an online exit ticket, showed that many students did not understand the use of literary devices, instructional plans were adjusted. Using a different reading allowed students to learn the material.
Informal Assessments designed and used to provide ongoing monitoring of student comprehension and allow for modifications of lesson plans as needed.
Example: After a quick chat revealed that students were struggling with decoding the dialectic in an author's work, I requested access to audio books to help support the learning and listening of the chapters. This allowed ALL learners to access the information needed and provided the necessary supports.
Student Formative Self-Assessment/Writer’s Conferences to allow students to reflect on their own understanding of the lesson and their work.
Example: Students revise and resubmit their work, completing a writer’s conference with me over the course of the revision period. Students learn to edit their own writing, engage with the essential questions of the prompt, and decide when to complete their final draft. Utilizing student self-assessment encouraged students to be equal participants in their learning.
As an educator, I want to encourage my students to be life-long learners. I encourage the love of learning in my students by making our learning relevant to their lives outside of the classroom.
Utilizing the community resources available to provide real life literacy skills for students about to graduate into the next phase of their lives.
Promoting literacy with student choice novels and close reading texts that discuss items of interest to them.
Student Designed Learning for choice and engagement with final assessment creation and presentation.
