Halloween
October 31st - HALLOWEEN
Did you know that...
Halloween was first celebrated in Ireland and Scotland and was called Samhain. It marked the end of summer.
The first Jack O'Lanterns were made with turnips (there were no pumpkins in Ireland).
The fear of Halloween is called "SAMHAINOPHOBIA".
Orange and black are Halloween colours because orange is associated with autumn, and black represents darkness and death.
The owl is a popular Halloween symbol. In medieval Europe, owls were thought to be witches coming to announce someone was about to die.
Pumpkins classify as a fruit, not a vegetable. The world record for the heaviest pumpkin weighs at 1.226 kg.
In the past, people were scared of evil spirits during Halloween. They would dress up in costumes and make noise in the streets to make spirits go away.
