Week of 12/15 - 12/17: We discussed any learnings they had from the Cost of Ownership activity that we did last week. We talked about how new cars depreciate so much faster and how the taxes and registration fees are so much higher. Then we played some financial planning games on ngpf.org. (Next Gen Personal Finance). Have a great break and see you in January! There will be homework for the week of 1/5 - 1/7 for those earning high school credit. (posted here soon)
Week of 12/7 - 12/10: We worked on the cost of a new car vs a used car. Students picked out a brand new car they would want to buy, and then find a 2 year old car. Compare rates of depreciation, insurance, taxes, registration fees.

Week of 12/1 - 12/3: We are still working on the debt chapter. This week we are talking about home mortgages and credit card debt.

Week of 11/17 - 11/19: Sub teaching this week. Students worked on "The hidden cost of ownership" activity. This activity allowed them to choose a brand new 2026 car and calculate all of the costs associated with purchasing the car. They did the same for a 2024 used car of the same model and compared the savings.
Week of 11/10- 11/12: We looked at calculator.net to see a credit card interest calculation. We watched 2-3 videos (depending on the class) about debt: car loans, predatory lending, co-signing loans, playing the lottery. No homework this week.
Week of 11/3-11/5: We start chapter 4 about debt. We watched 2 videos about the debt problem in America and then did an activity about hidden credit card costs.

Week of 10/20-10/23: We are working on the family reality budgets again this week and doing a review of chapter 3 (short 30 min class this week).

Week of 1013-10/15: We are finishing up the student budget exercises from chapter 3. We will start our "family simulation" to learn how to budget for a family.

Week of 10/6-10/8 This week we talk about a zero balance budget. We will work on student budgets and scenarios. We will complete the net worth calculations.

Week of 9/29-10/1 This week we are working on reconciling our bank account/checking account. We will discuss banking tools and a zero balance budget approach.

Week of 9/22-9/24: We started chapter 3 this week: budgeting. Students will learn how to create a budget and why this is important. We practiced writing checks and learning how to keep a checking account ledger.

Week of 9/15-9/17 - This week we are finishing up the lessons on saving and learning how to calculate compound interest. Ask your student to show you how to do this! We calculated it manually, in Google sheets and using the Ramsey planning calculator which can be found here: https://www.foundationsu.com/high-school
There is no homework for this week except to read all the pages in lesson 2 as we weren't able to do that in class. Show your parents the form we worked on in class and make sure it is complete. Week of 9/8-9/10 - This week we are talking about the importance of saving money and the effects of compound interest on your savings. Per Dave Ramsey, if you start in your teens and you save $100/mo at 12% interest, you will have a million dollars when you retire.

Week of 8/25 - 8/27: Today we talked about understanding the language of money. Students built an easy budget with income and expenses and assets. We reviewed case studies about how others could manage their money.

Week of 8/18-8/20 We talked about credit card debt in America and how we can avoid the pitfalls of having this personal debt.
If you want your students to earn 1 semester of high school credit, they can complete these extra assignments at home. I will not pass these out in class. They can click the links and access them here.
