10/22: Final discussion on our book The Strangers. We will do a graphic organizer comparing the "real world" to the dystopian parallel world. We will also make a protest poster related to the story,.
No homework this week. We start our next book The City of Ember after the October break!
10/15: We discussed that the book gets more exciting as we read. We spent time working on "What did they say?" We looked for quotes from all of the main characters that portrayed their personalities. (characterization) Homework: finish the book this week
10/8: We discussed our book chapters. Students wrote about what they would write to continue the next adventures in the book. We also did an "escape room" logic puzzles activity. Homework: read through chapter 50
9/31: We discussed the chapters they read (through 35). We also read The Pedestrian by Ray Bradbury and discussed the theme of the dangers of technology
Homework: (I wrote this down for all the students and gave it to them on paper. Read through chapter 42)
9/24: We discussed our book, The Strangers.

9/17: Students are struggling to complete all the reading. We can only have a good book study class if they do the reading. We discussed the characters in the book and analyzed each of them. Homework is to read up through chapter 30.
9/10: We were going to start The Strangers this week, but only 1 student had read the book chapters. So we discussed a little about the plot of the book and then did some code breaking challenges just like the characters in the novel. Homework: read chapters 1-20
8/28 - We read the short story Harrison Bergeron by Kurt Vonnegut and discussed it.
HOMEWORK: Students will read through chapter 20 in the book The Strangers. Students have an assignment to analyze a character and 20 questions to write down and answer as homework due week of 9/8.
Week 2: 8/18-8/20 - We reviewed elements in Dystopian writing. Watched a short ted talk Or listened to a short podcast about Dystopian topics. Next week students will get their books.
Week 1: 8/11-8/13 No homework. We will start reading The Strangers (by Margaret Haddix) next week.
