To help break up the day and offer opportunities to stretch and move I offer brain breaks were we dance, complete yoga stretches, or breathing exercises to help students not feel so stuffy throughout the day. This gives students a positive way to exert some energy through out the day.
These books are great tools for helping students understand their big emotions, name them, and help them navigate through them using art, pictures, and characters.
The Zones is a systematic, cognitive behavioral approach used to teach self-regulation by categorizing all the different ways we feel and states of alertness we experience into four concrete colored zones. Helping students to be able to identify the zone they are in and how to return or leave a zone is important on helping students self-regulate and manage behaviors and develop skills they will use both in and out of the classroom.
Music is a big part of my classroom experience and I utilize music to help students feel more at ease or energetic through out the day. Music can vary from relaxing to upbeat based on the mood needed. Students also have a say in what we listen to and have opportunities to share what music helps them to focus or makes them feel calm or energetic.
Here is an example of a lesson I utilize to help students in breath work. Breath work can be used to calm a student down or create focus. In this lesson we learn the blowing candle strategy where students even as young as Kinder can learn how to slow and focus on their breath to calm themselves down or focus.
