Semester Two 2024

I Need This Thing NOW!

Libraries Are Awesome

What is with the weird site name? It allows faster searchability on the internet and browsers. Once you have been here, the search history functions of your browser will allow you to find this site quickly. Type "fly" or "circ" in your address bar and this page will jump out.

Rights FAQ

Cell Phone and Legal Stuff

Yes you can have one here. No you may not use it in any way that goes against school and classroom policy. Yes we can confiscate it.

You have privacy rights regarding your phone and it may only be searched by law enforcement officer with a warrant. There is a search exception for emergencies that requires a situation “involving danger of death or serious physical injury to any person."

Free Speech and Legal Stuff

Yes you have the right to free speech here. No you are not free from the consequences of your speech.

You cannot use speech to interfere with other people's learning opportunities (can't disrupt class). You cannot use speech to interfere with someone's physical or mental health. You cannot threaten or intimidate. You cannot say untrue things that may harm a person's reputation. You cannot use vulgar language. You cannot encourage or celebrate illegal activities and drug use.

The school can still act against speech done on social media platforms and off campus if it relates to school business, our students, our teachers, our staff, and class disruptions.

Searches and Seizures and Legal Stuff

Yes, the school can search you and your belongings if we have reasonable suspicion that evidence can be found related to a violation of a school rule or a violation of state law. Yes, you always have a right to refuse a search and you should make clear that a search is taking place over your objection, but you should not use physical resistance to stop a search.

School employees are not able to conduct strip searches. If there is reasonable suspicion that a strip search is necessary it will be done only by law enforcement. School officials can detain you until that search can be performed. All searches are conducted with privacy and with same-gendered law enforcement.

Yes, the school can search your locker at any time.

Yes, the school can hire drug dogs to smell cars in the parking lots and conduct random classroom visits to smell belongings.

Standardized Testing and Legal Stuff

At this time California mandates standardized tests called the CAASPP (ELA and Math) and the CAST (Science). A Parent or guardian has the right to opt out his or her child with a written request to school officials.

Sex Education and Legal Stuff

When you’re scheduled for a sex ed class, the parent/guardian will receive a school notice that explains what the class will cover and offers a chance to review the curriculum and materials. If your parent decides that they don’t want you getting sex ed, they have a right to opt out with a written request to school officials.

Mandated Reporting and Legal Stuff

Adults on campus are all mandated reporters and are legally obligated to report any signs of child abuse or child neglect to the county.

Standardized Testing is (Mostly) Hot Garbage

1) Teachers connect goals to process to assessment. If a teacher can not see the questions, connections are not possible. It can not be considered curriculum. 2) A question that you can answer correctly without looking at the question, without processing the question, and without looking at the answers is not instructive. 3) An assessment that only returns a number and has no potential for review, reflection, question breakdown, or reteaching is not useful in a classroom.

Therefore I will use multiple choice as little as possible. There will be no word banks. There will be no matching.

There will be process, experiment, questions, answers, sharing, conversation, debate, presentations, performances, and essays.

You may be invited to take tests (AP Tests, ASVAB, PSAT, SAT, ACT) or required to take tests (CAST, CAASPP) because of state requirements but they will not have point values in my class.

If I teach standardized testing strategies, it will be a lesson in game theory, time management, and endurance, and will be a no-threat enrichment-only participation grade.

FOUR THINGS YOU NEED TO BECOME AN EXPERT 1. valid environment (structured, patterned) 2. many repetitions (not once-in-a-lifetime thing) 3. timely feedback (feedback as soon as you perform an action) 4. deliberate practice (practice outside of your comfort zone, at the edge of our ability, the zone of proximal learning)
