Period 2 World Language Survey (Gr. 6) Course Description
In this course 6th graders will be exposed to three languages on a rudimentary level during the course of a marking period. Students will learn about the geography, language, culture, and history of French, Spanish, and Chinese speaking countries in a ten week program. Using technology, print resources, TPR activities, and cooperative learning techniques, students will be able to sample three of the most widely used languages and rich cultures in the world. As students master map skills, make cultural connections and comparisons, learn core vocabulary, and experience cultural celebrations, they will become knowledgeable young learners with the ability to choose a suitable program of advanced language study in middle and high school. This innovative program is designed to foster skill development, language acquisition, and cultural sensitivity.
Period 3 French 1B (Gr. 8) Course Description
This course is a continuation of French 1A towards consolidaring the basic skills they have learned in rthe previous semester regarding the French language and culture during the course of a semester. The previous learned skills will be reviewed summarily to build on student's level of confidence and comfort before engaging in new thematic language acquisition. The focus is still on the functionality of the communicational mode through various learning techniques. The grammar is also taught incidently. Students will learn to use the language to: greet each other, identify people and things in a classroom, interact in a school setting, plan and engage in everyday activities, describe family and pets, discuss professions and occupations, order food and drink at a café, converse about places and activities around town, express leisure interests, talk about the weather, shopping and clothing, sport activities, etc. Interpersonal, interpretive, and presentational skills are consistently addressed. Communicative language tasks include but are not limited to interviews, cloze exercises, role-plays, situations, games, cooperative learning, free writing, flipped classroom, interviews, surveys and presentations. Culture is portrayed, through the use of authentic media, as it is practiced in a variety of francophone countries. Students learn manners of the French world, and are encouraged to integrate them in real, practical ways. The level one course primarily focuses on the various regions of France and their distinctive customs and cultural attractions. In addition, the diversity of the French speaking world beyond France is explored.
Period 4 French 1A (Gr. 7) Course description
This course is designed to provide a basic introduction to the French language and culture during the course of a semester. The focus is put on the functionality of the communicational mode through various learning techniques. The grammar is taught incidently.
