In my classroom, I strive to create a space where every student feels heard, seen, valued, and respected. The following images show students' work and material that I have used in the past years, which reflect my efforts to explore different social issues with my students. These activities are grounded in culturally relevant pedagogy, encouraging students to connect academic content with their personal experiences.
TPE1.7- Provide students with opportunities to access the curriculum by incorporating the visual and performing arts, as appropriate to the content and context of learning.
The students were learning about dystopian writing and creating their dystopian society. We include creating a seal for their community as a creative activity to promote different types of learning and engage the students in the project.
TPE 8 - Use digital tools and learning technologies across learning environments as appropriate to create new content and
provide personalized and integrated technology-rich lessons to engage students in learning, promote digital literacy,
and offer students multiple means to demonstrate their learning.
The assignment allows the kids to demonstrate their knowledge in a non-academic way and requires them to research an animal to build a paragraph. It helps kids make connections and empowers them to apply the content they've learned in everyday life. Additionally, it promotes the academic use of technologies and finding creative sources on the Internet.
TPE 2.3- Establish, maintain, and monitor inclusive learning environment that are physically, mentally, intellectually, and emotionally healthy and safe to enable all students to learn, and recognize and appropriately address instances of intolerance and harassment among students…
The students were learning about activism, and we introduced the topic to them by showing videos of Greta Thunberg and Malala. They had to analyze their movement and analyze their challenges. They had to understand the various fights and movements we face nowadays and develop their social awareness.
TPE 6 - Use and adapt resources, standards-aligned instructional materials, and a range of technology, including assistive technology, to facilitate students' equitable access to the curriculum.
In this unit, we were working on writing an argumentative essay using The Giver. In class, we provided the students with physical and online copies of the book. Considering the diverse reading levels of the class, we played the audiobook in class. The audiobook facilitates access to the curriculum and provides a more supportive dynamic for every student, regardless of their reading ability.
