The area of a circle (no special name this time) may seem daunting at first, however it has a very simple formula and the area discovery activity will help you walk through the steps to discovering the formula yourself.
By dividing the circle into a bunch of wedges, and arranging them into a rectangle, we arrive at the formula for area being: A=πr2
Notice that the radius is being squared. This means whatever unit of measurement we're using (centimeters, meters, etc) will be squared. This is what we expect since area has units of distance squared (cm2 , m2 , etc).
