"I want people to be free. To be healthy, to be educated, to be aware."
- Huey Freeman
I teach history because truth matters & having a full story matters. My earliest memory of history class was in elementary school flipping through a history textbook and noticing how people who looked like me were misrepresented or just plain missing at all. That moment sparked a lifelong curiosity to dig deeper, ask better questions, and seek the stories that weren’t being told.
As a culturally relevant educator, I believe every student deserves to see themselves in the curriculum. Main characters come in all shapes, sizes, colors, and backgrounds and students should be exposed to this diversity in their own learning. Each culture comes with their own rich histories, struggles, and triumphs. In my classroom, we explore diverse voices and lived experiences so we can better understand our own identities and build respect for the cultures of others.
History isn’t just about the past. It’s about the power to shape the future with knowledge, pride, and perspective.
A 5th Year educator on a mission to broaden student minds and mold the leaders of tomorrow. He firmly believes that true potential flourishes in diverse, inclusive, and academically challenging environments where students can include their unique experiences, cultures, and backgrounds into their learning journey. Mr. Etchison & his wife (Mrs. Etchison, also teaches at Union Grove) have been together since their own high school days, married in 2021, and they have one lovely 2 Year old daughter.
In our class, history isn’t just about names and dates. It’s about the real people, power, and perspective.
Whether we’re diving into World History or Ethnic Studies, we ask big questions:
🧠 Why did this happen?
🗣️ Who was impacted?
📣 Whose voices were heard and whose were silenced?
Through hands-on projects, group debates, and real-world connections, you’ll learn to think like a historian and discover how the past connects to you.
This is a space where every voice matters, curiosity is celebrated, and growth is the goal.
By the end of the year, you won’t just know history. You’ll be ready to challenge it, question it, and help shape what comes next.

The National Council for Social Studies (NCSS) states "the purpose of social studies is to combine social sciences and humanities to teach people how to be informed citizens in an interconnected & democratic world. It helps young people learn how to make educated choices for a diverse society and encourages them to stay involved in their communities throughout their lives."

Mindset Mondays (Every Mon)
In our history classroom, Mindset Mondays are more than just a way to start the week. They are a commitment to showing up with intention. Before we explore the powerful and complex stories of the past, we take time to center ourselves, reflect, and reset. Learning history through diverse perspectives requires more than just knowledge—it demands empathy, open-mindedness, and resilience. Mindset Mondays help us build the mental habits to do just that.
These moments remind us that growth is personal. Whether we’re confronting hard truths or discovering untold triumphs, we grow stronger by learning how to think, not just what to think.
As Kobe Bryant once said:
“Everything negative – pressure, challenges – is all an opportunity for me to rise.”
Let Mindset Mondays be that opportunity for all of us to reflect, grow, and rise as thinkers, leaders, and changemakers.
