The research interests of Multi-Physics Systems LAB include computational mechanics, solid mechanics, and computational nanotechnology. Since its establishment in 1987 when Dr.Seyoung Im joined the faculty of Mechanical Engineering, KAIST, our group has made research efforts to look into various problems in solid mechanics and fracture mechanics. Furthermore, we have conducted a diverse industry-sponsored research, dealing with failures and deformations of structures and mechanical elements. Among these examples are thermal stress problems of structures, electronic parkaging, and the simulation of welding processes.
Since 2001, we have focused on two subjects. One is computational nanotechnogy and mechanics of nano/micro-systems,including multiscale schemes and atomistic simulations of nano-systems, and the other is the development of finite element code for multiphysics, including thermal, metallurgical and mechanical analysis, which is appropriate for analyzing manufacturing processes like arc-welding and electronic packaging. In relation to this code development our efforts are also given to new finite element formulation based on the moving least squre (MLS) method. Our current research activities are well reflected on the recent results.
