Workshop Title: Exploring Partnership: What it means to be a Te Tiriti o Waitangi Partner
Jill is a Wellington City Councillor, first elected in 2016. Her time as a primary school teacher inspired her to stand for council, with the aim of supporting struggling families. She is passionate about advocating for children and young people, Māori, and Wellington's most vulnerable.
In 2018, Jill led the adoption of Te Tauihu, Wellington City Council’s Te Reo Māori policy to make Wellington a Te Reo Māori city by 2040, which will ensure that the language is seen, heard, and spoken widely in the city. This term, Jill has led the process to have mana whenua seats on council committees and to have a Māori ward from the 2022 election.
Jill descends from Ngāti Tūwharetoa and values the relationships she has built with local mana whenua in Te Whanganui-a-Tara.
Jill’s workshop will explore the council’s journey in partnering with mana whenua (the highs and the lows), and encourage us to think about how we engage culturally with our community, and what we can do as schools to be goodTe Tiriti o Waitangi partners.
