Project Description: My short written script hyper ballade is at its core about Young love and romance, or more specifically, falling out of love as one comes of age. The film follows Justin, a twenty-something who after being dumped by his ex-girlfriend Laurine suffers from a depressive episode. To cheer him up his best friend Vince pays him a visit, proposing to watch a marathon of Justin's favorite films, which Justin agrees to. The rest of the film unfolds in the course of the same afternoon as Justin's memories, imagination, and aching heart meld to form a reality only he inhabits or even comprehends.
I created this piece as a way to get things off my chest. The film is almost autobiographical, with most of the plots event and moral dilemmas present in the text being directly taken from my personal life. I was inspired to tell this story as most of the themes tackled in the script such as anxiety, heartbreak, and transitioning from teenage to adulthood are ones that I am still troubled by and am trying to cope with. Thus the writing of the project almost served as a very long therapy session, as I romanticized both the highest and lowest points of my young adult life. More than just encapsulating my feelings and memories, the script encapsulates my taste and personal aesthetic, as I reference works of art that have highly influenced me in the past few years. Everything from the Dave Mathews Band to Jean Luc Godard, meld to create a both meta and highly personalized product. Both my tastes and personal experience coalesce to form an artistic encapsulation of my 19-year-old self.
I chose the medium of the written short script, because it is the one I am the most comfortable and familiar with, thus making it the best fit for a narrative that is so close to my personal life. As the extremely visual and conversation-heavy leanings of the narrative made it more cinematic than it was literary, making the script the medium I chose. The cinematographic leanings appear most in the film's form, as it both satirizes and pays homage to countless film styles From Romantic Comedies to Western, creating a highly personal and conceptual love story. Or as I like to call it, a Hyper-Ballade.
