The Janzen Lab has led the long-term monitoring of a painted turtle population in the Northern Mississippi River for over 30 years. This fieldsite, colloquially named "Turtle Camp" borders the Mississippi next to rural Thomson, IL. Each year, students and researchers who complete work at Turtle Camp partner with the Thomson Public Library to host an outreach event for K-12 students. During this event, we hold an interactive presentation for students and parents centered around local river ecology and turtle biology.
Turtle Camp is situated amongst an RV and tent campground in the Thomson Causeway Recreational Area, where turtles emerge from the river in early summer to lay nests. Hundreds of campers witness this phenomenon each year- many are return recreationists who have camped at this site for many years and look forward to observing turtle nesting season. Janzen lab members hold interactive presentations about turtle behavior and ecology for local campers. In the left picture, 2022, campers observe and learn about nesting painted turtles.
