I focus on outreach with local schools in Durham and the broader Durham community to bring science to the public.
I help run outreach activities through Duke's Shared Materials and Instrumentation Facility, as well as helping with specific women in STEM activities on Duke's campus.
We provide hands on science activities like making masks for UV sensitive paper to mimic the photolithography process used in our labs, using UV sensitive and glow in the dark beads for bracelets to discuss light waves, light microscopy, and a table top SEM to explore samples at a higher resolution than the light microscopes allow for.
I have run these activities for local public school groups visiting campus, as well as taking these activities to the Durham Public Library and the Durham Science Museum for the broader community to get to engage with science.
I mentor both undergraduate and high school students within the lab to train the next generation of scientists. I work with them on gaining research and wet lab skills.
Sigrid Real-Agular, a Chemistry major at Duke, has been working with me since the fall of 2023. She has presented her work at one of Duke's undergraduate poster sessions.
Emily Simmons is a high school student who worked with me over both the summer of 2023 and summer of 2024, and is a part time volunteer during the 2024-2025 school year.
