My name is Sarah Moore and I am a 6-12 science teacher at Uwharrie Ridge 6-12. My education adventure started 15 years ago when I graduated from SUNY Potsdam with a BA in Elementary Education and a minor in Biology/Ecology. I used my passion for science during my first teaching assignment as a 5th grade teacher where I lead an after school environmental club. During this time I wrote grants for raised bed gardens that turned in to a school-wide integrated lesson that took me to Uganda, Africa to share those lessons with teachers there. Shortly after this I finished my Masters in Middle School Science with a speciality in Environmental Science from UNC Greensboro and moved to 7th and 8th grade science . At the middle school level, I lead an after school club that tested water quality in the Archdale-Trinity area and shared the data with scientists. Students would also present to local government officials to build rain gardens around the area.
Last year, I made the move to high school science and essentially "came home". Uwharrie Ridge 6-12 is very similar to the school I graduated from in NY. Our students come from a rural area of Randolph County in central North Carolina. Students in our school are unique in that they have been together pretty much since kindergarten. Since we are relatively small it allows us to offer smaller classes for our students. As our school grows towards adding our 12th grade, we are adding new and innovative ways to prepare our students for their future beyond The Ridge. For me this has been a homecoming of sorts. Even though I have not came back to my own school to teach it feels like I have come home.
My family: Eric, 7 and my husband, Adam reside on a small farm in the same community as my school.
