iii. Contacts for Proactive Researcher-Community Communication
Should a buoy get tangled in a fishermen's net, there be an accident, emergency or spill, or you find something that might be incredibly interesting to the community - be that scientific or nonscientific - do you know who to contact? Familiarizing ourselves with this information and introducing ourselves to these important people before any of these events happen paves the way to proactive, safe, and effective working relationships.
Our first line of contact between Station scientists and community members is with the staff at Gump Station.
When you arrive on station, get acquainted with important contact information for these individuals - they can also help you get in touch with community members, other scientists, the Atitia center, universities and regional institutions and others. Be proactive in acquiring this information: station staff contact information is essential in emergency situations.

It is recommended that teams planning to work at sea have prepared two devices - one for a field team and one for a shore contact (and that both teams are aware of the float plan).
Note: VHF radios are not usually the device of choice while working in the Moorea lagoon due to the mountains that can interfere with signal.
