Frequently Asked Questions
Please read about us page.
Our dread are mainly made out of wool.
We also use angora from rabbits.
Very rarely do we use synthetic materials. If we do, this is a by product of another craft or project we were making.
If there are other products in the dread, we will list them.
We use a variety of dyes. We try to stay as natural as possible, however, not all colors can be achieved this way. Our dyes vary from an acid base to a water base. We make sure that all of our dying processes do not harm the environment. Mother Earth is very important to us.
We use a variety of wools.
Liz owns most of our sheep and she has---
Robin also has sheep and angora rabbits.
Each person is different.
You can braid them in for a removable style or "felt" them in for a more permanent style.
Most people braid them in. Please visit our social media channels for directions.
Our licensed cosmetologist, Liz, can walk you through what is best. Contact her via her website.
We know our products are ethically sourced, or "obtaining products and services ethically along the supply chain" because we raise our own animals.
If we do not provide our own wool, we know where it came from as two of our business owners are part of a Montana Fiber organization that takes pride in where/how they get their fiber (wool).
All of the extra gems, jewelry, and add ons that we put on our dreads are sourced as ethically as we can. We try to hire local artists in Montana and around the country. We make most of our own materials that go on the dreads. While some accessories may have materials that have been bought, we try to make sure the sources are supporting human rights and keeping our carbon footprint small.
Recycling takes old materials and breaks them down into new materials that can be used for other products. Upcycling takes old materials and transforms them into something new and better than what they were before. Both recycling and upcycling are important parts of going green and reducing your carbon footprint.
Our products are hand made from start to finish.
We raise our sheep as family in Montana.
We sheer our own sheep.
We clean our own wool by hand WITHOUT chemicals
This is why some of our locs have more vegetable matter than others
This matter is clean and will not effect the loc.
When we comb our wool it is done by hand or small hand cranked combs.
We dye our wool as natural as possible.
There some colors that cannot be made with natural materials.
We use food coloring or powdered juice packets to get most of our NEON or bright colors.
Some wool does use a professional dye to achieve different colors.
We hand spin and hand roll our clean wool.
This is not done with a machine, in fact when we are spinning we are using a foot pedal powered wooden spinner.
We use our hands to make the felted locs that often look like or associated with a natural dreadlock shape/texture.
Most companies by their wool from online venders that have been commercially and chemically processed. They they use a more factory set up for making the locs.

This answer depends on who you ask and where you look.
There have been multiple articles and each says something slightly different. There is even a children’s book written about why the term should be “Locs”.
We, at Montana Bohemian Artisans use the term “Dreads” most often. These are a form of either braid-in or loc-in wool “ropes” that have been felted.
When wool felts, the fibers are locked together to make a tight solid rope. We take our wool that we have cleaned (dyed or left natural) and make roving. We either use this and spin it first or hand roll it. Both are felted into a “dreadlock.”
Montana Bohemian Artisans take pride in being respectful to all humankind and Mother Earth.
Dreads, dreadlocks, and/or locs have been worn by almost every culture at some point in time, regardless of their origin. It is a popular fashion staple for many people today.
This again depends on your style and size of head. We have found that 30 double ended dreads gives a nice look.
We provide pictures of how to separate your hair under our Dreads page.
