This answer depends on who you ask and where you look.
There have been multiple articles and each says something slightly different. There is even a children’s book written about why the term should be “Locs”.
We, at Montana Bohemian Artisans use the term “Dreads” most often. These are a form of either braid-in or loc-in wool “ropes” that have been felted.
When wool felts, the fibers are locked together to make a tight solid rope. We take our wool that we have cleaned (dyed or left natural) and make roving. We either use this and spin it first or hand roll it. Both are felted into a “dreadlock.”
Montana Bohemian Artisans take pride in being respectful to all humankind and Mother Earth.
Dreads, dreadlocks, and/or locs have been worn by almost every culture at some point in time, regardless of their origin. It is a popular fashion staple for many people today.
Our signature look is "mix and match" to fit your individual style!
Please see "more information" below for what length you should order.

Lengths are measured as installed-folded, NOT tip to tip.
On an average person the lengths are as follows:
Short: 12-15 inches, chin to shoulder blade
Medium: 16-20 inches, shoulder to mid-back
Long: 20-24 inches, mid-back to waist
XL: 24 + inches, waist to bottom
*Most model pictures of P.J. are 30+ inches; however she is 5'10"
Please measure from the nape of your neck to desired length to get an estimate of which length to order.
You can cut and "seal" our dreads. Please watch this video on how to do that. SEALING
Looking for a layered look with more texture and luminous volume - consider mixing 2 sets of different lengths. If you need a longer set, please message us and we can do a custom length for you!
Can be installed on hair 3" or longer in any texture.

All sets come with free dread jewelry that are removable** if you choose to take them out.
Because our dreads are ALL natural, they contain a naturally secreted lanolin oil, which is not only beneficial for your hair and scalp, but also has a slight natural fragrance.
Best practice is to wash with blue dish soap, which cuts down on grease or spray with essential oils if you find the scent undesirable.
For a more natural treatment, you can soak in mild, diluted distilled white vinegar, approximately 1 cup of vinegar to 1 gallon of water. However, this will strip your wool dreads of the natural lanolin moisturizer.
Please see this video for CARE
Wool dreads range in thickness from pencil to Sharpie size, between 7mm and 11mm.

Dreads can be worn as long as you like. It depends on how fast your natural hair grows, your style, an your comfort.
P.J. wears her 8 weeks before she redoes them. She washes the dreads that need washed once out of her head. About week 7, she will wear headbands and/or tie her hair up more to keep the "fuzzy" from showing. When P.J. has Liz (and the girls) redo her hair, she adds them right back in. She has worn most of her dreads for 4 to 6 months in a row. Some longer. She changes out her colors for the season.
*Update - P.J. has her top blonde locs that are attached to her permanent dreads. She has 16 permanent dreads and changes her bottom colored ones every 12 to 14 weeks. Her natural dreads vary in length from 10 inches to 4 inches. She has found regular maintenance is best rather than waiting the 14 weeks when she changes colors. This is her preference. Everyone is different. She washes her dreads approximately 2 times a year. How do you say? The natural oil in our dreads helps maintain a healthy loc.
You may find you have favorite ones that you wear over and over. Remember, our dreads can be cut! Please watch our videos for more information on care.
