Garden Town Approach

Somerset West and Taunton Council have adopted Taunton as a Garden Town. The Taunton: The Vision for Our Garden Town document has been adopted by the Council and will guide and influence all future plan-making and development management decisions. The Vision states:

"Taunton, the County Town of Somerset will be flourishing, distinctive, and healthy - and the country's benchmark Garden Town. We will be proud to live and work in a place where the outstanding natural environment, diverse and thriving economy and inspiring cultural offer, contribute to an exceptional quality of life and well-being".

The Green Infrastructure Strategy has driven the development proposals for the new garden town neighbourhood. The retention and enhancement of existing hedges and trees together with the provision of new green corridors and the green necklace provides a joined-up network, easily accessible and convenient to use. There are opportunities to promote physical activty, play and social interactions to help to foster healthy and communal lifestyles.

The Green Infrastructure Strategy includes mitigation to minimise flooding and promote a diverse range of habitats resilient to flooding and climate change and improve biodiversity.
