“The Daily Norm”

"Hong Kong International Photo Festival 2020 - Unruly Visions"
Photography
Artist: Monique Yim
Main Photographer: Terence Li
As a female-identified queer interdisciplinary artist, Monique Yim is the Other, living outside the norms of gender binary, heteronormativity, and mainstream working full-time lifestyle in Hong Kong.
Through documenting the artist's gender expression and daily life, the photos in this project represent the relationship between her visibly masculine tomboy body and her surroundings, including people she interacts with and everyday city life. The work challenges “normativity” and Otherness in both gender identity and lifestyle aspects, illustrating the possibility and existence of living with fluidity and ambiguity.
Aside from examining people's gazing in each lively scene, this project provides an opportunity for the artist to re-examine herself. She questions if her boundary-crossing body is indeed visible and seen as a spectacle by others, invisible and understood as "male" through the binary gender lens, or simply acknowledged and accepted as a “tomboy” when she exists in this city. In addition, she offers an open conclusion inviting the audience to reflect and consider whether they are living in an inclusive and diverse community, an exclusive and heteronormative space, or an environment situated in-between. Regardless of people's interpretations, Queers and queerness are a part of daily life.
