The Finnish Heritage Grain Propagation Network is developed in the project Diveristy to Fields. We welcome farmers, millers, sourdough bakers and consumers interested in heritage grains and old grain cultivars to the network. By odering the newsletter you will get information about the project and other information about heritage grains and old cultivars.
Diversity to fields project (MoPe) is a three-year (2021-2023) development project. The project seeks solutions to diversify the varieties cultivated in Finland, utilizing landraces and old commercial varieties. The project has five WPs:
The first work package develops and strengthens the operating model of the seed propagation network established in 2017. In the network 75 persons participate in propagating seeds. There are a total of 156 landraces or old commercial varieties of arable crops. Of these, 110 are landrace cereals, the rest are buckwheat, broad beans, peas and grasses. In addition, there are landraces and old commercial varieties found on the farms. The use of old varieties will increase and the seed will be more accessible to farmers by developing the seed propagation network.
The second work package collects previous information on the cultivation history, plant characteristics and quality factors of landraces and old commercial varieties. Data collection utilizes existing studies as well as cultivation experiences of the seed propagation network.
In the third work package, field trials are carried out at Häme University of Applied Sciences' Mustiala teaching and research farm. Increasing the cultivation of landraces and old commercial varieties requires an assessment of their usefulness from the point of view of production and further processing. Based on the information obtained, usability criteria are built.
In the fourth work package, a roadmap will be drawn up, which will envisage steps to increase diversity in Finnish crop production. The roadmap seeks answers to the question of how the production, processing and sustainable use of diverse cereal varieties can be significantly increased from current levels. The roadmap work is part of the project events and brings together the results of the other work packages of the project.
Articles and e-publications will be written about the results of the project. The results will be communicated in the project webinars, website, newsletters and social media.
