1.0. Teaching Philosophy Statement
I believe that it is important for the teacher to take the class together keeping given the class proportion is based on variation in students' intellect, diversity, abilities and confidence etc. This means that it is essential to address all of these variations during the course of a semester so that a minimum acceptable threshold is maintained and all pupils are on the same page. Therefore the concept of the plan, do, check and act can assist the lecturer in successfully delivering the course and pedagogy techniques. Herein, I will briefly go through my teaching philosophy.
1.1. Addressing the issues first
In teaching, not everything is going to be a smooth and buttery ride. Issues and problems are all part and parcel of a class let alone the academic career. 99% of the class issues that are related to behavioural changes, emotions, bullying etc. can be accommodated with a simple one-on-one session with the student as a mode of direct academic advisor. Simple pieces of advice, encouragement, confidence building measures can effectively change the inner world of any student in distress of some kind. The attitude of the teacher matters, the way the teacher feels the student matters, and the way the teacher mentors and guides the student individually through proper eye contact to instigate a sense of encouragement matters, even more, 1.2. Reflecting Teaching must be strengthened by continuous improvement This principle reflects my approach to subjects that I am allotted to teach repeatedly. There are ample opportunities to make changes to make it better than how it was taught in the previous semester. This is when a continuous improvement mindset comes in which triggers the feeling to make changes in teaching style, assessments, delivery and course contents to make an impact. As the strong knowledge base develops, so do innovations in pedagogy. Hence, maintaining a commitment to remain open to learning opportunities, pieces of training, and online webinars is essential that not only upskill our subject grip but also gives us current trends and future vision.
1.3. Adaptability
Adaptability is one of the most important parameters in an academic career. During the course of our career, new programs will be initiated, new subjects will be taught, courses will be redesigned and the curriculum will be changed. All of these changes trickle down to our willingness and openness to new tasks being assigned.
1.4. Reflecting Teaching must be strengthened by continuous improvement
This principle reflects my approach to subjects that I am allotted to teach repeatedly.
1.5. Diversity
Commitment to diversity comes under the umbrella of the United Nations Sustainable development goals (SDGs). For instance, SDG4 quality education for all, SDG5 gender equality, SDG8 decent work and economic growth, SDG10 reduced inequalities are the ones coming under this umbrella. I solely believe that gender, race, sex, religion, personal beliefs are separate from professional work ethics. There is no room for a person to be judged, evaluated, or looked at through the lens of these categories that have been defined. Equal opportunity and equality are what are getting worldwide acknowledgement and we are in the correction mode. What pretense we set will be practically observed in our future generations.
1.6. Concluding Remarks
Humanity is free from creed, caste, religion, ethnicity, sex, color, language, and it demands globalization. Our goal, aim and vision are to nurture a generation that is free from such terms that exist. It is in our hands as to how we shape them and with the UN SDG, it seems at the education level we are following the correct path.
