With more than 15 years of research experience, Dr. Akintomide work is dedicated to advancing the science of Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias (ADRD), with particular emphasis on the lived experiences, needs, and outcomes of individuals with ADRD and their care partners. Her research examines how socio‑ecological contexts, psychosocial determinants, and care environments interact to influence disease trajectory, caregiving burden, and overall quality of care. Using community-based participatory research principles, mixed‑methods designs, equity-centered approaches, behavioral science, and psychometric methods informed by social science theory, she investigate both the direct and indirect mechanisms through which structural and interpersonal factors contribute to disparities in ADRD care, access, and health outcomes. Her work aims to delineate modifiable pathways that can inform targeted, culturally responsive interventions.
A significant portion of her research focuses on the development, refinement, and evaluation of technology-enabled and evidence-based interventions for at‑risk ADRD populations. Through interdisciplinary collaboration, she co‑create and test digital tools, assistive technologies, and innovative care models that are designed to be effective, sustainable, scalable, and relevant for diverse communities, particularly those historically underrepresented in ADRD research. Her contributions to the ADRD field are supported by competitively funded projects and disseminated through high‑impact peer-reviewed publications, book chapters, and national and international conference presentations.
