Our goal is to evaluate popular educational mobile games and how they shape learning and assessment, and what this means for learners, educators, and research.
Mobile gaming refers to playing video games on smartphones or tablets. As Syvertsen et al. (2022) note, it involves “diverse forms of gaming that become more accessible as mobile devices proliferate.” Because devices are portable, powerful, and always connected, gaming is now widespread and differs from traditional platforms in context, frequency, and design.
Research shows that mobile gaming can have both positive and negative effects. It can boost motivation, relaxation, and informal learning, but it also raises risks of overuse and distraction (Li, 2022).
Educational mobile games, when well designed, can improve outcomes in math, reading, writing, and language learning. They encourage repeated practice, instant feedback, and higher engagement, sometimes surpassing traditional teaching methods (Wang et al., 2022). However, factors such as learner motivation, age, and game design (challenge level, accessibility) shape success (Umamah, 2023).
Game-based assessment platforms are widely used in classrooms. They turn testing into an interactive experience that emphasizes feedback, competition, and engagement. Research shows students often find these tools less stressful than traditional tests, while teachers benefit from faster feedback and flexible test design (Swacha & Kulpa, 2025; Wilkinson et al., 2020).
Still, challenges remain. Some games emphasize recall over deeper learning, rely on multiple-choice formats, or provide limited feedback (Mimouni, 2022). For educational impact to last, game design must balance motivation, accessibility, and meaningful formative assessment.
