Major: Biomedical engineering
Emphasis: Medical device design
I decided to go into biomedical engineering because I have always loved math and science, so I knew I wanted to go into some sort of engineering degree. My junior year in high school I took an anatomy and physiology class which I loved, so I looked into how I could incorporate it into my engineering degree. When I found out biomedical engineering allowed me to put all of those together I decided that's what I was going to do.
When dermatology was one of project options for senior design I decided to select it because I have struggled with my skin the majority of my life, and spent a lot of time at dermatology appointments and researching how to improve my skin. I thought it would be an interesting branch of medicine to explore since I can relate to a lot of the patients. I also thought I could create something to help others avoid going though the same struggles I did.

Emphasis: Medical Device Design
Like many of my classmates, I had a love for chemistry and biology as well as math and physics. After taking the Biomedical Engineering freshman seminar, I was hooked on the idea of using engineering to help better lives. I have also enjoyed being a part of the marching band here at the university.
Dermatology stuck out to me as an important topic because I have dealt with dermatology appointments for many years due to my eczema, a common skin condition. I saw it as a great opportunity to learn more about a field that has affected me for most of my life and to possibly help those suffering from different skin conditions.
Major: Biomedical engineering
Emphasis: Biomechanics
I chose to go into Biomedical Engineering because I was interested in finding solutions to medical problems and wanted to help people live better lives. I felt that this was the perfect opportunity to learn and gain the tools needed to do that.
The field of dermatology interested me because I believe in the importance of taking care of your skin and am always looking for new ways to do that.

Growing up, I have always wanted to start a career in healthcare. Biomedical engineering offers a different approach than the traditional path of becoming a physician. With a biomedical engineering education, I have the chance to incorporate math and physics - two of my favorite subject - into understanding human physiology. As a biomedical engineer, I believe I will have the chance to work on application that would transform the field of healthcare.
When I knew that dermatology was one of the emphasis area for this year's senior design course, I had to pick it as one of my top three right away. Going through my teenage years, the dermatology clinic was one of my frequent visits as I struggled with acne. Knowing that there are a lot of people like me out there who also struggle with their skin gives me special interest in the field. Medicine is not only there to save lives but also to make it better.
