Mira Mesa High School’s Army Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (AJROTC) is a leadership-focused program rooted in the Army values of loyalty, duty, respect, selfless service, honor, integrity, and personal courage. We equip cadets with discipline, confidence, and real-world leadership skills, preparing them to take initiative and lead from the front, both in school and in life.
As part of the Mira Mesa Battalion, cadets participate in structured training like drill and ceremonies, uniform inspections, team competitions, and Army-style PT (Physical Training). Annual events such as the Cadet Picnic, Mira Mesa Street Fair, and the formal Cadet Ball foster teamwork, esprit de corps, and lasting friendships. Cadets wear the uniform with pride and uphold the standard of excellence expected in an Army program.
What sets AJROTC apart is that it is a cadet-led program. The Senior Staff, made up of high-ranking cadets, plan battalion events, lead formations, manage internal operations, and oversee leadership development across all ranks. Company Commanders train and guide a company of 10-30 cadets in drill, discipline, and daily operations, while Drill Team Captains create and teach original routines for competition. Special Teams, ranging from STEM-oriented to performance-based, host weekly meetings and prepare for competitions that occur year-round, while Section Staff assist with maintaining the unit through logistical and administrative duties. Through these roles, cadets learn to lead by example and earn respect through action.
While AJROTC fulfills PE credit, it is far more than a typical gym class. Weekly drill sessions help cadets build focus, coordination, and military bearing. Twice a week, cadets gear up for PT, where they stretch, run, and compete in team-based physical challenges, just like in a real Army unit.
Cadets are also expected to serve their community, embodying the Army value of selfless service. The Mira Mesa Street Fair is our largest community service operation, attended by nearly the entire battalion. Additional missions include campus clean-ups, supporting school staff, and volunteering at local events.
Cadets seeking to go above and beyond can try out for one of our competitive, performance-based drill teams:
Armed Fancy Drill Team
Color Guard
Sabre Team
Unarmed Fancy Drill Team
These teams showcase the discipline, precision, and pride of our battalion. Cadets who pass tryouts earn the honor of representing us in competitions and official ceremonies.
