Harumi was born in Kobe City, Japan in 1959. At the age of seven he enrolled in his first Japanese Kenpo class. He continued practicing this style until the age of 17 when he gained interest in Muay Thai. He started training and competing all over the world including Spain, France, the United States, and many other countries.
While in Guam at the age of 25 he sustained a serious injury that left him partially paralyzed on his right side. He immigrated to the United States after this and through many twists and turns he established the first Muay Thai gym in Seattle, AMC.
AMC is Seattle's oldest gym, and the second most historic MMA gym in the world, outside of Japan. It is the only Dojo in the world that has produced a formal champion in all combat sports. His conceptual approach in how he managed and ran his dojo has become the basic management model for most American mixed martial arts gyms to this day.
While at AMC he raised a total of seven world champions including Morris Smith, Curtis Schuster, and Josh Burnet. Harumi is the first Japanese MMA trainer to raise UFC champions, and remains the only one to this day.
In the year 2000 Harumi relocated to Hawaii and established HMC, which soon became the number one kickboxing/MMA gym in Hawaii. A number of top athletes have received coaching from Harumi, including Dennis Alexio, BJ Penn, Charte Behesimo, Sydney Silva, Matt Brown, Kei Ishii, Demetrius Johnson, Renato Verissimo, and many more.
In addition to having coached for the Honolulu Police Department, US Army's Ranger Forces, and Naval Special Forces, he also was connected through Dahui and coached many pro surfers including Makua Rothman, Mark Healy,Kala Alexander, Kai Gorcia, Elijah Young, and more. Some of his current fighters out of Japan include: Daiche Abe, Yukari Nabe, Suguru Nii , Kiyoshi Kuwabara, and Koki Shimokawa.
