For 70 years Mount Michael Abbey has been a beacon of peace, prayer, and community for decades. The Mount Michael Land Preservation Committee is committed to conserving the land around Mount Michael Abbey. Our mission is to protect the Abbey's cloistered environment, restore native prairies, and prevent encroaching urban development. To ensure that our abbey remains a serene place for reflection and spiritual growth, we are embarking on a vital mission to acquire a key piece of land adjacent to our property. Together, we can ensure this sacred space remains a beacon of tranquility and faith.
Recently real estate developers have built around Mount Michael, consistently getting closer. This is likely for two reasons: one, Omaha has expanded out this far and people want to live in Elkhorn, two, there is about to be a “wonderful” new lake built by the NRD (Natural Resources District), and all the houses near the lake will be worth more. Numerous housing developments have already been planned on both sides of 216th including (but not limited to): VISTANCIA, WOODSONIA 216 - FORT, and CALAROSA.
The trajectory shows that should these development companies get the land, residential development will be constructed close to the lake along the east side of the Abbey property soon upon completion of the Dam Site 12 project.
Pictured to the left is some of the construction work for these developments and the reconstruction of the road near Mount Michael
Three of the tracts right next to Mount Michael (colored in pink) are in danger of being sold to these development LLCs. If it is not purchased by Mount Michael first, this land will become large "McMansion" houses.
The land in question, is crucial for maintaining the natural beauty and tranquility of our surroundings. These plots, located between the abbey and 216th Street, are currently owned by farming families. We hope to negotiate a purchase agreement with these families before the land is sold off to a housing development company.
By purchasing this land, we aim to:
Protect our Environment: Preserve the natural landscape and wildlife that are integral to our abbey's peaceful atmosphere.
Ensure Tranquility: Maintain the privacy and tranquility that our monks, visitors, and community cherish.
Expand our Mission: Provide more space for retreats, educational programs, and spiritual activities that benefit the broader community.
Your support can make a significant difference. Here’s how you can join us in this mission:
Pray: Join us in praying for the success of this effort and the continued blessing of our abbey.
Spread the Word: Share our mission with your friends, family, and community. The more people who know about our cause, the greater our chances of success.
Your generosity and support are deeply appreciated. Together, we can ensure that Mount Michael Abbey remains a place of peace, prayer, and spiritual enrichment for generations to come.
