Our founding
In response to the increasing threat of encroaching real estate development and in alignment with the Mount Michael 2020-2025 Strategic plan (Aspiration 1, goal #2) Abbot Michael Liebl and Jacob Sykora chartered the Mount Michael Land Preservation Committee on 15 July 2024, to coordinate efforts to preserve the land around the Abbey campus.
Mission and Vision
The Mount Michael Land Preservation Committee is dedicated to preserving and enhancing the tranquil environment surrounding the abbey. Our current focus is on the acquisition of 3 crucial tracts of land adjacent to Mount Michael. This land is vital for maintaining the serene atmosphere of the abbey and ensuring it remains a place of prayer, reflection, and community for generations to come.
Our Purpose
Our purpose is to spearhead efforts that enable Mount Michael Abbey to purchase and protect this vital land. By doing so, we aim to safeguard the natural beauty of the area, prevent unwanted development, and ensure that the abbey's peaceful surroundings are preserved. This acquisition will allow us to continue our mission of fostering spiritual growth, education, and community outreach in a serene and contemplative environment.
What We Do
The Committee engages in a variety of activities to support our mission, including:
Conservation Planning and implementation: Our conservation team members work hard to create and execute environmental and sustainability plans to keep our land and habitats healthy.
Community Outreach: We reach out to our local and extended community to raise awareness about the importance of the land preservation projects.
Partnerships: Building partnerships with local businesses, organizations, conservation groups and individuals who share our vision of preserving the natural beauty and tranquility of Mount Michael Abbey.
Grant Applications: Applying for grants from charitable foundations and other organizations that support environmental conservation and community development.
Why It Matters
Mount Michael Abbey has been a cornerstone of our diocesan community for decades, providing a place for spiritual retreat, education, and service. The acquisition of the adjacent land is essential for:
Environmental Conservation: Protecting the local ecosystem and preventing the negative impact of potential development.
Community Preservation: Ensuring that the abbey remains a peaceful sanctuary for all who seek solace and spiritual growth.
Future Generations: Safeguarding the abbey’s surroundings for future generations to experience the same peace and beauty that we cherish today.
