At the heart of the Land Preservation Committee’s mission lies a deep commitment to land conservation. We believe that protecting our natural landscapes is not only crucial for the preservation of biodiversity but also integral to sustaining the spiritual and communal life of our surroundings.
Sustainability for Future Generations: Land conservation is about more than just protecting space today—it’s an investment in the future. We strive to ensure that future generations will inherit a landscape that is both healthy and vibrant. Our efforts aim to sustain natural resources, reduce environmental degradation, and promote the responsible use of land so that it remains a refuge of peace and contemplation for years to come.
Environmental Stewardship: As stewards of the land, we see it as our duty to care for the earth in ways that align with our values of respect for creation. Through initiatives like prairie restoration, sustainable land management, and wildlife habitat creation, we work to restore and protect the natural balance of our surroundings. This allows us to preserve the rich history of the land while also adapting to the ecological needs of the present.
Education and Advocacy: Part of our mission is to educate others about the importance of land conservation and advocate for responsible environmental practices. Through community outreach, partnerships with conservation organizations, and educational programming, we engage both local residents and broader audiences in the importance of protecting our environment. We believe that by fostering awareness and inspiring action, we can create a lasting impact on the future of land preservation.
Conservation on the Current Premises:
Since our creation in July 2024, we are actively taking steps to enhance sustainability and conservation on our current campus. Our conservation efforts focus on enhancing biodiversity by gradually introducing native plant species, such as Buffalograss and Hairy Grama Grass, to replace non-native lawns. Pollinator gardens featuring plants like Milkweed and Black-eyed Susan are being added to attract bees, butterflies, and other pollinators. Additionally, bird and bat boxes are being installed to encourage wildlife habitation, while composting stations and waste reduction initiatives further support an eco-friendly campus. Restoration of Native Ecosystems:
Our goal once we obtain the jeopardized tracts is to transform the existing farmland and smooth brome (Bromus inermis) grass into restored native prairie ecosystems. By doing so, we aim to reintroduce a variety of native plant species, which in turn will support a broader range of wildlife. This restoration effort is about creating a resilient landscape that can withstand environmental changes and provide essential habitats for local species. (see plan)
Our commitment to land conservation is more than just a mission statement—it is a fundamental part of who we are and what we strive to achieve. As we look towards the future, we remain dedicated to preserving the land that nurtures both the body and the spirit.
