A service from the Gateway STEM ESOL Department to teachers who serve MLLs.
Welcome to Gateway STEM ESOL Department PD! This PD offering is completely online, asynchronous, and supported with coaching from ESOL teachers. Look at the tabs above and select a learning option that could help you.
English as a Second Language
This term refers to the certifications that ESOL teachers hold, the classes that they teach, and ESOL Students can refer to students learning English.
English Language Development (ELD) is a synonymous term that the SLPS ESOL Office has started using in 2024.
English Language Learner or English Learner
This term refers to a student learning the English language. The term was first used in a study in 1994. The SLPS ESOL Office started using Multilingual Learner (MLL or ML) in 2021 with the rollout of a new WIDA standards rollout. Both ELL and MLL seem to be used interchangeably.
Multilingual Learner
I believe this term contains the assumption that students are learning more than one language and may have immigrated already knowing more than one language. The term is seen as more inclusive and even anticolonial. I started to see this term in 2021 with the rollout of the new WIDA standards by the SLPS ESOL Office
