McCoy's Speaking Notes
Business:
Important Detail: The ELL box in SIS means nothing. I have attached Gateway's X file to an email that I sent you. Students that are not RCV (receiving services) passed the ACCESS test (better than 4.7) at some point. I have a tool that easily puts access scores next to student names on any roster. If you want data on your class, let me know.
Students with a 1 or 2 on access probably can understand some of the simple words you say easily and would really benefit from written instructions and simple directions.
Students at a level 3 probably have a pretty good grasp on social reading, writing, speaking, and listening in English. They will struggle with academic language in all domains.
Students at a level 4 are starting to get a grasp on academic English and are close to reclassifying to mainstream classes. They also benefit from written instructions.
Objective: SWABAT use language acquisition theory to acquire a framework for implementing lessons to improve comprehension and main idea.
Chunking Main Idea
Step 1: instruction on summary (see photo below)
Step 2: reading and comprehension tested by a quiz.
Ensuring that students can both see and hear the text (study sync option) is important.
Photos help (Gallery Walls and Walks).
Including group discussions helps.
Step 3: gradual release of supporting detail identification.
Step 4: gradual release of key point synthesis.
Step 5: gradual release of main idea synthesis.
Step 6: work on automaticity and speed.
