This is a great opportunity for students to experience playing in a large ensemble with the best young musicians from all around central Illinois. If they do well enough at district auditions, then they may go on to play in the All State Orchestra which is a massive deal. More information is here. - https://ilmea.org/
DATES
Monday, September 15th - Deadline to tell Mr. Akers if you are officially going to turn in an audition
Monday, September 29th - Deadline to send video links to Mr. Akers for him to turn in
Saturday, November 1 - Concert Festival (Western Illinois University, Macomb) - We will have a bus for students to get there and back, Families are welcome to join for the concert and take students home from there if you let the teacher know.
2 options for audition
District Participation Only: Students will need to play one 2-8ve scale (G Major or C Major), and play the lyrical etude (you are welcome to turn in only half of the excerpt if it is too difficult)
All-State Qualification: Students will need to play both 2-8ve Scales (G and C Major) and play both the lyrical and technical etude.
All State performance will be in late January at the Illinois Music Educator's Conference at the Peoria Civic Center

Link to scales are HERE also on schoology orchestra page
Note from the judge: I would also say, that if you have students who can play some or most of the excerpt, but maybe can't get through the third positions parts, then just encourage them to play the first half or a portion of the etude. This is the first year that we will be requiring auditions for the junior level string students, so we are trying to make it as easy a process as possible!

I hope you all have had a wonderful summer! This year, I am asking all 7th and 8th grade orchestra students to purchase their own method book. We will be using Essential Elements book no. 2. Make sure you purchase the book for the correct instrument. It is available online, however I highly suggest you purchase this through Kidder Music. They are available on their website, kiddermusic.com or you could give them a call and have it delivered straight to the MJHS, so that it can be ready to roll day one. Kidder Music - (309) 692-4040. I have a handful of extras laying around, so let me know if you need one. Thanks! Let me know if you have any questions. I'm excited for another year of making great music and having fun!
Morton Schools partner closely with Kidder Music. If you're looking for something, calling them should usually be your first move. They can handle buying/renting instruments, music, supplies, lessons and much more.

Practice slow - Keep finger nails short - listen to recordings
Help each other - Slow down recordings - Ask questions
download apps on your phone for tuners and metronomes for practing at home
Practice the hard parts slowly until there are no hard parts
practice the way you want to perform
Three T's = Time, Tune and Tone focus on maximizing these three skills
Go back to easy songs to focus on your skills, otherwise you might only be practicing how to read music
When practicing alone - pretend that you are your own teacher
Practice slowly with a metronome - Search up other fun songs
Practice - Reward yourself after a practice session
Practice things right slowly the first time - Don't practice making mistakes quickly, they can be hard to unlearn
Have fun! - Take some time to just play random notes and make up your own songs
Play for your friends and family, get comfortable with playing in front of people, this will grow confidence
