Emoji Story Activity

Reflection Questions: 

1. What was your process for converting the text to emojis? Did you rely more on syllables, words, ideas or a combination of all of them? 

To convert the text into emojis, I used the Emoji Keyboard and ran through my original text word by word. Some words such as “is” or “the” were untranslatable, but I tried to use the symbols and emojis as much as possible to translate most of my text. I used a combination of words, ideas, and symbolism in sentences to convert the text to emojis.  

2. Did you start with the title? Why? Why not? 

Yes, I started with the title because it was easier for me to begin the process of conversion with a smaller text. Starting with the short title, I was able to navigate through the new website too and work my way around it to eventually translate whole complex sentences. Therefore, the title allowed me to start of smoothly and eventually get faster at finding the required emojis for the text. 

3. What were your challenges when you were converting the title to emojis? 

When converting the title to emojis, I found it most challenging to find the right symbols/emojis to represent the name of the character. The title is the name of the main character in the plot of this movie, and because it is also in a different language, I found it harder to convert to emojis. However, I was able to directly translate the title and create a “subtitle” for my readers to comprehend it better. 

4. Did you choose the work based on how easy would it be to visualize?  

No, I did not choose this work based on how easy it would be to translate and visualize. In fact, I did not know at the beginning of this activity that we would be using emojis to translate our text; therefore, it was a fair opportunity to write the text first and challenge me to translate it.
