Calendar for a first-year cohort at MIT
There are a number of milestones in the first-year at MIT. This calendar lists a few with links to learn more.
April
- Campus Preview Weekend
- Applications to Interphase EDGE, MIT's summer bridge program, due
May
- Freshman Essay Evaluation Registration Period (May 1 - July 4), the first step in completing MIT's undergraduate communications requirement
June
- Apply for Freshman Advising (with options including advising seminars, learning communities, and traditional advising) and Freshman Pre-Orientation Programs (FPOPs)
- Complete Freshmen Housing Lottery application
- Interphase EDGE begins for about 70 first-year students
July
- First-year students complete AlcoholEdu; Haven for College; and Kognito - Emotional Wellness online training, as well as complete Transitioning to MIT exercise
- First-year housing lottery assignments building and room assignments released; in some residence halls, the student may choose to keep this room as their final room, in others they are told it is a "temporary" room
Mid August to early September
- First-year students begin to arrive for International Orientation and other early arrival programs, e.g., athletic teams
- Submit MIT Medical Waiver, if applicable
- Online Freshman Advising Folder is available
- Participate in Freshman Pre-Orientation Programs (FPOPs)
- Orientation
- Residence Exploration, Interfraternity Council (IFC), Panhellenic Association, Living Group Council (LGC) Recruitment
- Activities Midway
- Residence Hall Activities (e.g., floor/open house meetings, final room assignments in some dorms)
- Students may download the Mobius app and enroll in MakerLodge to gain access to MIT Makerspaces, get a toolbox of making tools and $100 MakerBucks to spend on making supplies.
September
- Advanced Standing Exams
- Fall Semester classes begin (Typical schedule, 54 unit credit limit, Pass/No Record grading policy for "C" or better)
- Interfraternity Council Recruitment, Panhellenic Association Recruitment, and Living Group Council Recruitment, early September
- Quarter 1 Physical Education Courses to end of October
- UROP Direct Funding Deadline for Fall
- Career Week and Career Fair
October
- Add Date early October
- Family Weekend
November
- Quarter 2 Physical Education Courses to end of term
- Drop Date mid November
- Wellness Fair
December
- Last day of classes mid December, followed by final exams

- Accept early sophomore standing to receive a departmental advisor (about 1/4 eligible, 50%-60% of those offered sophomore standing accept)
- Department Exploration (DEX) events begin
February
- MIT xFair (career fair and tech expo)
- Spring Semester classes begin (Typical schedule, 57 unit credit limit, "A", "B", or "C" grades recorded, "D" and "F" grades recorded internally)
- Quarter 3 Physical Education Courses to Spring Vacation
- UROP Direct Funding Deadline for Spring
March
- Add Date early March
- Spring Vacation late March
- Confirm Housing selection for upcoming academic year, including move to FSILG or another residence hall
April
- Quarter 4 Physical Education Courses to end of term
- Spring Drop Date (and Baker Hall Piano Drop)
- First-year students typically declare their major at the end of the month

- Online Pre-Registration for Summer and Fall begins
- MIT Awards Convocation
- Last day of classes mid May, followed by final exams
