In 2020, Hedgehogs were listed as 'vulnerable to extinction' on the UK Red List for Mammals. In the State of Britain's Hedgehog Report 2022, it was reported that in urban areas there may be a stable population of hedgehogs that might be recovering. This highlights the importance of local action to ensure the future of hedgehogs.
The project's goal is to identify where hedgehogs are present in the residential areas and green spaces around Mitcham Common. We aim to support hedgehogs in our area by uniting the community and local stakeholders while promoting conservation efforts. These efforts include citizen science surveys, the creation of hedgehog highways, and the development of hedgehog-friendly greenspaces.
This project follows on from the hedgehog surveys that were carried out in 2022 and 2023 by the Friends of Mitcham Common, with funding from the Mitcham Common Education Trust. You can find out more about these surveys and what the Friends of Mitcham Common are doing to help hedgehogs here.
Hedgehogs enhance not only the richness of our wildlife, but also uplift our mental well-being, reminding us of the beauty and interconnectedness of nature.
We can help each other, together!
